Thursday, February 28 (6-9 pm)
Check out Art Against Aids 2008 at the River East Art Center. You’ll not only be helping a great cause, but you can also support a local arts organization all while enjoying art, cocktails, dancing, and gourmet delicacies.

Friday, February 29 (7 pm)
The Old Town School of Folk Music is hosting World Dance Night this Friday. Bring some friends and get your groove on!

Friday, February 29 (6-10 pm)
For a new kind of night out, check out After Dark at the Art Institute of Chicago. With cocktails, live music, DJs, and plenty of amazing art to appreciate, it’s a great way to visit the museum and have a fabulous night out.

Sunday, March 2 (4:30 pm- 8 pm)
Celebrate Dr. Suess’s Birthday at Marche with costumed characters and Suess-themed menu items! It’s certainly a recipe for fun for the whole family.

Chicago Dog Show

Fellow bloggers over at Chicago Hot Blog have posted about the Chicago Dog Show, which will be held February 22-24 at McCormick Place.

Hosted by the International Kennel Club, the show will feature over 150 breeds of dogs, along with Junior Dog Judging (for kids 10-18) and the Puppy Spectacular. General admission is $16, seniors are $10, children under 12 are $3, and kids under 3 are free.

Techies unite at TECH Cocktail Chicago 7 held at John Barleycorn. This technology mixer is a great way to meet others involved in the industry and make some connections through networking.

Thursday, February 21- Saturday, February 23 (8 pm)
The Dance COLEective is presenting Written on the Body, a piece exploring the lives of the famed Bronte sisters.

Saturday, February 23 (2 pm)
Head over to the North Austin branch of the Chicago Public Library for a fantastic open mic/poetry slam featuring local poets Patrice Morrison, Ida Barnes, and Syreeta Williams.

Sunday, February 24 (1 pm)
Check out Chicago’s Best Wingfest this weekend at Bailey Auditorium. The city’s best wing chefs will be competing for “Best of Fest” while you sample amazing wings from 20 restaurants all while helping raise money for charities!

If you’re a frugal traveler who’s not so keen on the idea of spending a ton of money simply on maps, you’re in luck!

Budget Travel just alerted us to the concept of Schmaps, which are free travel guides to places all over the world with local, zoom-able maps, and marked attractions.

These guides are great for planning out itineraries based on your personal interests as well, providing all sorts of suggestions based on your preferences.

Ecoustic Chicago

Acoustic Chicago will be hosting Ecoustic Chicago, an eco-friendly event to build awareness about the green efforts of the city of Chicago on February 20 at 7 pm.

Held at Joe’s Bar, this event includes art, music, dance, photography, film, and fashion in a gallery setting to promote the coming together of all the different art forms. All the artists involved are eco-conscious and have come together to promote the theme of “protecting the environment.”

Tickets are just $10 in advance and $12 at the door, with a portion of the proceeds going to an Illinois environmental charity.

Black History Month

Celebrate Black History Month at Navy Pier with “Perseverance & Persistence: An Exhibition of Pride.”

Held in the Crystal Gardens, this event will run from February 2- 22 and showcases 28 notable African Americans and their contributions to American culture and society. From Langston Hughes to Frederick Douglass, there are portraits of so many amazing individuals that guests can read and appreciate.

Author Jennifer Parello will be reading from her new novel Dateland at Women & Children First, which deals with two dear friends handling difficult breakups.

Saturday, February 16 (2 pm)
Head over to the Chicago Cultural Center for the Chicago premiere of the award-winning documentary Iron Ladies of Liberia. There will be a panel discussion after the film, focusing on the current electoral crisis in Kenya and connecting it to the topics in the film.

Saturday, February 16 (4:30 - 6pm)
Warm up with High Tea at Chalkboard every Saturday through March.  Enjoy an amazing selection of teas along with sandwiches and scones with a group of your friends.
